What is antibacterial fabric?

Antibacterial fabric inhibits the growth of bacteria and microorganisms to improve hygiene and reduce odor.

What is UV protection fabric?

UV protection fabric helps block harmful ultraviolet radiation and is commonly rated using the UPF system.

What is flame retardant fabric?

Flame retardant fabric is designed to resist ignition and reduce flame spread to improve safety in hazardous work environments.

What is waterproof breathable fabric?

Waterproof breathable fabric prevents water penetration while allowing moisture vapor to escape, making it suitable for outdoor and performance apparel.

What is moisture wicking fabric?

Moisture wicking fabric transfers sweat away from the skin to the fabric surface where it can evaporate quickly, helping keep the wearer dry and comfortable.

What are the main types of functional fabrics?

The most common functional fabrics include moisture wicking fabrics, waterproof breathable fabrics, flame retardant fabrics, UV protection fabrics, antibacterial fabrics and recycled sustainable fabrics.

What is functional fabric?

Functional fabric is engineered to provide specific performance properties such as moisture management, waterproof protection, flame resistance, UV protection, antibacterial performance or sustainability benefits.

Material & Fiber Questions

16
Can you match custom colours for swimwear fabric?

Yes. We match custom colours to Pantone references, physical swatches or approved lab dips, and prepare strike-offs for approval before mass production. For recycled swim fabric we lean on lab dips more heavily, since recycled feedstock can shift colour slightly between batches.

What is recycled polyester fabric made from?

Recycled polyester fabric is commonly produced from post-consumer PET plastic bottles and recycled polyester waste.

What fibers are commonly used in functional fabrics?

Common fibers include polyester, recycled polyester, nylon, elastane, aramid, bamboo fibers and specialty performance yarns.

What is recycled swimwear fabric made from?

Recycled swimwear fabric is usually spun from post-consumer PET bottles into RPET polyester, then blended with elastane for stretch. Recycled-nylon versions are also made from reclaimed nylon waste such as fishing nets, and both can carry GRS certification for traceability.

Does swimwear fabric offer UV protection?

Tightly knit swim fabric can reach UPF 50+, blocking more than 98 percent of harmful UV radiation. The protection comes from a dense weave plus UV-absorbing engineering, and it holds up through chlorine and saltwater rather than washing out.

What is the difference between PU, PVC and TPU coating?

PU is soft, flexible and the default for bags and light covers. PVC is fully waterproof but stiff and heavy, best for tarpaulins and banners. TPU is soft, tough, weldable and recyclable, for technical shells and dry bags. We recommend PU for most coated-bag work and TPU when you need welded seams or a plasticiser-free film.

What is stretchable polyester fabric made of?

Stretchable polyester gets its give either from textured yarns (a modest mechanical stretch with no elastane) or from an elastane blend of 8-22% for true four-way stretch and recovery. For activewear we usually add a moisture-wicking finish so the fabric also moves sweat.

How long does chlorine-resistant swimwear fabric last?

A pool-grade polyester-elastane holding 100-plus hours of chlorine exposure typically lasts two to three times longer than a standard swim fabric. For a daily lap swimmer or swim-team member, that is the difference between a suit surviving a full season and one dying by mid-summer.

How much elastane does 4-way stretch fabric need?

Real four-way stretch with good recovery needs roughly 15-22% elastane. Below 15% the recovery sags by the second season, which is why we hold our swim and compression blends at the higher end of that range.

Is swimwear fabric chlorine resistant?

Pool-grade swimwear fabric is engineered to resist chlorine, with our polyester-elastane blends holding 100-plus hours of chlorine exposure before performance drops. Nylon blends feel softer but break down faster in chlorinated water, so blend choice depends on how often the garment meets a pool.

What does the D number in Oxford fabric mean (210D, 420D, 600D)?

The number before the D is denier — yarn thickness. Higher denier means a heavier, tougher, more abrasion-resistant cloth. 210D suits linings and light bags, 420D backpacks, and 600D luggage, workwear and outdoor covers. We point most bag programs to 600D for the best abrasion-to-weight balance.

What is the difference between 2-way and 4-way stretch fabric?

Two-way stretch moves in one direction, usually across the width. Four-way stretch moves across both width and length. For tight, high-movement garments like swimsuits and leggings we recommend four-way; for relaxed tops or lined pieces, two-way is cheaper and sufficient.

Which is better for swimwear, polyester or nylon?

Polyester-elastane resists chlorine and holds colour and shape far longer, so we recommend it for pool, competition and swim-lesson use. Nylon-elastane feels softer and drier against the skin, which suits fashion swim and beachwear that rarely sees a chlorinated pool.

What is Oxford fabric?

Oxford fabric is a basketweave cloth — two or more warp yarns crossing a heavier weft — usually woven from polyester or nylon for technical use. The weave gives a fine texture, good tear resistance and a smooth face that takes waterproof coatings well, which is why it dominates bags, tents and covers.

What is 4-way stretch fabric?

Four-way stretch fabric stretches across both its width and length and recovers to shape in both directions. That dual movement is why it is the default for swimwear, leggings and compression wear, where the garment has to follow a moving body without bagging out.

What material are swimming costumes made of?

Most swimming costumes use a polyester-elastane blend (around 82/18) for pool and competition wear, or a nylon-elastane blend for softer fashion swim. The elastane gives four-way stretch, while the polyester or nylon carries chlorine resistance, UV protection and quick-dry performance.

Performance & Testing

14
How effective are antibacterial fabrics?

Properly engineered antibacterial fabrics can significantly reduce bacterial growth and help control odor in apparel and healthcare products.

What is the difference between UPF and SPF?

UPF measures the UV protection provided by fabrics, while SPF measures the protection offered by sunscreens applied to skin.

Are flame retardant fabrics washable?

Yes. Most industrial flame retardant fabrics are designed to maintain protective performance after repeated laundering when proper care procedures are followed.

Can waterproof fabrics remain breathable?

Yes. Waterproof breathable fabrics utilize membranes or coatings that block liquid water while allowing moisture vapor to escape.

What waterproof rating is suitable for outdoor jackets?

Outdoor jackets commonly use fabrics rated between 10000mm and 20000mm waterproofness depending on intended weather conditions.

How long does moisture wicking performance last?

Moisture management performance can last throughout the life of the fabric when achieved through fiber engineering rather than surface treatments.

What is the difference between moisture wicking fabric and quick dry fabric?

Moisture wicking fabrics move sweat away from the skin, while quick dry fabrics focus on accelerating evaporation. Many performance fabrics combine both functions.

What does UPF 50+ mean?

UPF 50+ means the fabric blocks more than 98 percent of harmful ultraviolet radiation.

What is a waterproof rating?

A waterproof rating indicates the amount of water pressure a fabric can withstand before leakage occurs, usually measured in millimeters.

How is moisture wicking performance tested?

Moisture management is evaluated using standardized methods such as AATCC and ISO testing procedures measuring absorption, spreading and drying speed.

Does recycled swimwear fabric perform as well as virgin?

At the spec band we run, recycled polyester matches virgin on the numbers that matter for swim: chlorine resistance, four-way stretch, UPF 50+ and quick dry. The one honest trade-off is colour, since recycled feedstock varies slightly batch to batch, which we manage with lab dips before bulk.

Does stretch fabric lose its shape over time?

Poorly specified stretch fabric bags out within a season, usually because the elastane content is too low or the recovery was never tested. Fabric engineered with 15-22% elastane and verified recovery holds its shape through hundreds of wears — we send recovery figures, not just weight, on every swatch card.

What hydrostatic head do I need for outdoor waterproof fabric?

For real weather, aim for 10,000mm hydrostatic head or higher, paired with an MVTR of 10,000+ g/m2/24h so the fabric also breathes. A high waterproof rating with poor breathability leaves the wearer wet from sweat, so treat both numbers as a pair, not one in isolation.

Is Oxford fabric waterproof?

Bare Oxford is not waterproof — the coating on the back is what stops water. A PU coating handles bags and light covers, PVC gives full waterproofing for tarpaulins and heavy covers, and PA offers light repellency for linings. Specify the coating separately from the denier.

Which industries use moisture wicking fabrics?

Moisture wicking fabrics are widely used in sportswear, fitness apparel, uniforms and performance clothing.

What is nylon ripstop fabric used for?

Nylon ripstop weaves reinforcement threads into a grid so a small tear stops instead of running. Its high tear strength at low weight makes it the go-to for tents, packs, packable jackets, parachutes and kites. Outdoor nylon ripstop is almost always coated with PU or silicone for waterproofing.

What is the difference between 2-layer, 2.5-layer and 3-layer waterproof fabric?

2-layer bonds a membrane to the face fabric with a separate hanging liner — cheapest, for casual rain jackets. 2.5-layer adds a printed protective layer for light, packable shells. 3-layer sandwiches the membrane between face and backer — toughest and most breathable, our pick for technical outerwear.

Is 4-way stretch polyester good for activewear?

Yes. Four-way stretch polyester with 15-22% elastane and a moisture-wicking finish handles high-movement training well, following the body and drying fast. Match the elastane load and weight to the garment: compression tights and a loose training tee need different builds.

What GSM is best for swimwear fabric?

180-200 GSM suits lightweight fashion swimwear, 200-220 GSM is the workhorse band for most one-pieces, and 220-240 GSM gives the compression and opacity needed for team and competition suits. Below 180 GSM the fabric can turn transparent when wet.
