Moisture Wicking Fabric

High-performance moisture management fabrics engineered to quickly transfer sweat away from the skin for enhanced comfort and performance.

Technical Description

Overview

Moisture wicking fabrics are engineered performance textiles designed to move perspiration from the skin's surface to the fabric's outer layer, where it evaporates rapidly. These fabrics are primarily constructed from synthetic filament yarns—most commonly polyester and polyester-spandex blends—using specialized cross-section fiber profiles and capillary channel structures that leverage capillary action to transport moisture. The wicking capability is achieved through a combination of fiber geometry, tight knit or woven construction, and hydrophilic/hydrophobic chemical finishes applied during dyeing and finishing.

Key Properties & Specifications

  • Fabric weight: 110–260 gsm depending on construction, with lightweight mesh at 110–140 gsm and stretch interlock varieties at 200–260 gsm
  • Composition: 100% polyester (75D/72F, 100D/144F microfiber) or 85–92% polyester with 8–15% spandex for stretch grades
  • Moisture wicking rate: sweat transfer to fabric surface within 3–5 seconds; drying time 30–50% faster than standard cotton jersey under equivalent conditions
  • Breathability (moisture vapor transmission): 5,000–8,000 g/m²/24h, with open mesh constructions reaching up to 10,000 g/m²/24h
  • Water column (hydrostatic head): 3,000–10,000 mmH2O for coated or densely woven variants; standard breathable knits are non-waterproof by design to maximize vapor escape
  • Tensile strength: warp 350–550 N, weft 280–450 N; tear strength 18–35 N depending on weight and weave density
  • UPF rating: 30–50+ for tightly constructed and solution-dyed fabrics, blocking 95–98% of UV radiation
  • Dimensional stability: shrinkage controlled to within 3–5% after wash (AATCC 135); colorfastness to washing and rubbing rated 4–5 on the grey scale (ISO 105)
  • Working temperature range: performance stable from -20°C to 60°C; recommended wash below 40°C
  • Stretch and recovery (spandex grades): 4-way stretch with 40–60% elongation and 90–95% recovery

Popular Products

Moisture Wicking Polyester Fabric

This is the foundation of the category, built from 100% polyester filament with a channeled fiber cross-section for high capillary transport. It offers durability, dimensional stability, and cost efficiency for large-volume orders, making it the standard choice for entry-level and mid-tier performance apparel programs.

Moisture Wicking Jersey Fabric

A single-knit construction with a smooth face and soft hand, typically 140–180 gsm, that balances wicking performance with next-to-skin comfort. Its lightweight drape and printability make it well suited for t-shirts, base layers, and everyday active apparel.

Moisture Wicking Mesh Fabric

An open-structure knit engineered for maximum airflow and heat dissipation, generally 110–160 gsm. The larger interstitial spaces accelerate evaporation and ventilation, positioning it for high-exertion applications and panel construction where breathability is the priority.

Quick Dry Sports Fabric

Optimized specifically for rapid evaporation, this fabric uses microfiber yarns and hydrophilic finishing to achieve drying times significantly shorter than conventional knits. It targets intensive sports and outdoor use where athletes need moisture cleared quickly to maintain thermal comfort.

Moisture Wicking Stretch Fabric

A polyester-spandex blend (typically 88/12 or 90/10) delivering 4-way stretch alongside moisture management, at weights of 200–260 gsm. The elastane content provides freedom of movement and shape retention, making it ideal for compression wear, leggings, and fitted garments.

Antibacterial Moisture Wicking Fabric

This variant combines moisture transport with an antimicrobial finish—commonly silver ion or other durable antibacterial treatments—to inhibit odor-causing bacteria. It serves markets requiring hygiene performance such as intimate sportswear, socks, and medical or uniform textiles, retaining antibacterial efficacy through 30–50 wash cycles.

Applications

Athletic and performance apparel: base layers, running shirts, cycling jerseys, and training tops where rapid sweat management and quick drying directly affect athlete comfort and performance.

Team and league uniforms: jerseys and kits produced in bulk that require consistent color matching, durable printing for numbers and logos, and reliable wash performance across full-season use.

Outdoor and hiking wear: shirts and mid-layers for variable conditions, combining moisture wicking with UPF 50+ sun protection for extended exposure in the field.

Compression and fitness wear: leggings, compression tops, and yoga apparel using stretch grades for fitted support, movement freedom, and moisture control during high-intensity training.

Corporate and industrial workwear: uniforms and safety-adjacent garments where staff experience heat and sustained physical activity, requiring breathable, durable, and easy-care fabric that maintains appearance over repeated laundering.

Medical, hospitality, and hygiene textiles: scrubs, service uniforms, and undergarments where antibacterial moisture wicking variants reduce odor and improve wearer comfort during long shifts.

Customization & Wholesale

Minimum order quantity: standard MOQ is 500m per color per construction for stock-base fabrics; custom-developed constructions typically require 1,000–3,000m depending on complexity. Sample yardage of 3–5m is available for quality evaluation and lab testing prior to bulk commitment.

Width and weight: fabrics are produced in standard widths of 150cm and 160cm, with custom finished widths available on request. Weight can be adjusted within the range of 110–260 gsm to meet specific garment and end-use requirements.

Color and dyeing: full custom color matching to Pantone TCX/TPG references is supported, with standard dye-lot MOQ of 500m per color. Solution-dyed (dope-dyed) options are available for improved colorfastness and reduced water usage on larger programs. Colorfastness is guaranteed at grade 4 or above for washing, rubbing, and perspiration.

Printing and finishing: available finishes include sublimation printing, screen printing, digital printing, moisture-wicking hydrophilic treatment, antibacterial finish, UV-resistant finish, anti-static, and water-repellent (DWR) coating. Sublimation and digital printing support all-over patterns and gradient designs with no additional color-count surcharge.

OEM and ODM: full OEM services cover custom fiber specification, construction development, finishing packages, and private-label roll packaging with custom selvedge branding. ODM support includes technical development based on target specifications for weight, stretch, wicking rate, and hand feel, with in-house lab testing for tensile strength, colorfastness, shrinkage, and moisture management.

Lead time: sampling lead time is 7–15 days; bulk production lead time is 20–35 days after sample approval and deposit confirmation, depending on order volume, dyeing requirements, and finishing complexity. Reorders of stock-base constructions ship in 15–25 days.

Quality and compliance: production is compliant with OEKO-TEX Standard 100 certification, and testing is conducted to AATCC and ISO standards for moisture management (AATCC 195), shrinkage (AATCC 135), and colorfastness (ISO 105). Documentation and third-party inspection can be arranged on request.

Export capabilities: shipping is supported worldwide via sea and air freight, with FOB, CIF, and EXW terms available from major Chinese ports. Standard packaging is roll-packed in polybags with inner cardboard tubes, then wrapped for container loading; export documentation, including commercial invoice, packing list, and certificate of origin, is provided. Accepted payment terms include T/T with 30% deposit and 70% balance against shipping documents, and L/C at sight for qualifying order volumes.
