High-Performance TPU Laminated Fabric for Technical Textiles

Our TPU Laminated Fabric represents the gold standard in technical waterproofing, combining the structural strength of high-denier polyester or nylon with the advanced protective properties of Thermoplastic Polyurethane (TPU) films. Unlike traditional coatings, TPU provides a breathable yet waterproof membrane that delivers exceptional durability and flexibility, making it the premier choice for high-performance outdoor apparel, medical equipment, and technical inflatables.

Why TPU is Superior to PVC

For decades, PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) was the standard for waterproofing. However, modern technical textiles have shifted toward TPU for several critical reasons:

  • Cold Flexibility: PVC tends to stiffen and crack in freezing temperatures. TPU maintains its elasticity and soft hand-feel even in extreme cold (-30°C).
  • Breathability: TPU micro-porous membranes allow sweat vapor to escape while blocking liquid water, a crucial feature for active wear.
  • Eco-Friendliness: TPU is non-toxic and fully recyclable, whereas PVC contains chlorine and harmful additives.
  • Clarity: TPU films are crystal clear, offering better aesthetics and better adhesion to the fabric base.

Advanced Lamination Technology

Our lamination process utilizes precise heat and pressure bonding to fuse a thin layer of TPU film directly onto the fabric face. This creates a seamless, airtight barrier that eliminates the need for bulky seam taping in certain applications.

  • 2-Layer (2L): Membrane bonded to fabric. Durable and suitable for heavy-duty jackets.
  • 3-Layer (3L): Membrane sandwiched between the face fabric and a protective backer. Lightweight, packable, and ideal for high-end shell wear.

Rigorous Performance Testing

To ensure reliability in demanding environments, our TPU laminates undergo extensive testing:

  1. Hydrostatic Head (EN ISO 811): Tested to reach ratings of 20,000mm to 30,000mm, providing protection against torrential rain and snow.
  2. Seam Adhesion (ISO 11001): Verified to withstand mechanical stress without peeling.
  3. Color Fastness to Rubbing & Washing: Ensures the fabric maintains its appearance through industrial laundering.
  4. Cold Crack Test: Confirms flexibility at sub-zero temperatures.

Ideal Applications

The versatility of TPU laminated fabric makes it suitable for a wide range of industrial and consumer goods:

  • Outdoor & Sportswear: High-end ski jackets, mountaineering shells, and waterproof trousers
  • Medical: Waterproof surgical gowns, sterile packaging, and IV fluid bags
  • Inflatables: PVC-free alternatives for inflatable boats, rafts, and furniture
  • Workwear: High-visibility safety gear and industrial rain protection
  • Transport: Truck tarps and lightweight cargo covers

Related Products & Applications

TPU Laminated Fabric belongs to our Waterproof & Breathable Fabric category, a range engineered for reliable moisture protection combined with everyday comfort. It shares core performance traits with related materials such as Waterproof Breathable Fabric and 3 Layer Waterproof Fabric, both of which prioritize a balance of water resistance and vapor transfer. Compared to Waterproof Polyester Fabric, TPU Laminated Fabric offers a durable bonded membrane that enhances flexibility and long-term wear, making it a versatile choice for demanding conditions. Buyers often evaluate it alongside Outdoor Shell Fabric when specifying materials for high-performance garments.

Typical applications for TPU Laminated Fabric span a wide range of protective and performance uses. It is a popular selection for Outdoor Apparel, including rain jackets, insulated layers, and technical pants that require dependable waterproofing without sacrificing breathability. The fabric also suits gear such as backpacks, tents, and equipment covers, where consistent barrier performance is essential across changing weather.

These qualities make TPU Laminated Fabric a strong fit for the Outdoor & Adventure Industry, where manufacturers demand fabrics that stand up to rugged environments while keeping wearers dry and comfortable. Its adaptability also extends to sports, workwear, and lifestyle segments that value both function and durability.

We supply TPU Laminated Fabric on a wholesale basis with flexible customization options. What is the difference between PU, PVC and TPU coating?

PU is soft, flexible and the default for bags and light covers. PVC is fully waterproof but stiff and heavy, best for tarpaulins and banners. TPU is soft, tough, weldable and recyclable, for technical shells and dry bags. We recommend PU for most coated-bag work and TPU when you need welded seams or a plasticiser-free film.
