Technical Description
Overview
UV protection fabric is a category of technical textiles engineered to block or absorb ultraviolet radiation across the UVA (315–400nm) and UVB (280–315nm) spectrums. These fabrics achieve UV resistance through a combination of tight weave construction, high-density yarn packing, and functional treatments including titanium dioxide (TiO2) or zinc oxide additives embedded at the fiber or coating stage. Base materials range from high-tenacity polyester and nylon to elastane-blended knits, allowing the category to serve applications from apparel to heavy-duty outdoor and marine end uses.
Key Properties & Specifications
- UPF rating: UPF 50+ standard (blocks ≥98% of UV radiation), tested to AATCC 183 and AS/NZS 4399; entry-grade constructions available at UPF 30–40 for lighter-weight fabrics.
- Fabric weight: 80–320 gsm depending on construction — apparel and swimwear knits at 150–220 gsm, outdoor and marine woven grades at 200–320 gsm.
- Tensile strength: 800–1,400 N (warp) and 600–1,100 N (weft) for woven polyester grades, tested per ISO 13934-1.
- Tear strength: 25–60 N depending on weight and weave, tested per ISO 13937-2.
- Water column: 3,000–10,000 mmH2O for coated outdoor and marine variants; uncoated breathable apparel grades are water-repellent rather than waterproof.
- Breathability (MVTR): 3,000–8,000 g/m²/24h for apparel and stretch grades, measured per ISO 15496; coated marine grades trade breathability for higher water resistance.
- Shrinkage: ≤3% after washing (warp and weft), tested per ISO 6330.
- Colorfastness: 4–5 rating for light (ISO 105-B02) and 4–5 for washing (ISO 105-C06); solution-dyed variants reach light fastness 7–8 for prolonged outdoor exposure.
- Operating temperature range: -30°C to +70°C without material degradation; UV-stabilized grades retain UPF performance after 500+ hours of accelerated weathering.
- Elongation: 4-way stretch grades deliver 40–60% elongation with ≥90% recovery for stretch and swimwear applications.
Popular Products
UPF 50+ Fabric — The category benchmark, constructed for maximum UV blockage of ≥98% across UVA and UVB. Available in both woven and knit forms from 150–250 gsm, it is the default specification for buyers who require certified sun protection documentation for regulated markets.
UV Resistant Polyester Fabric — A high-tenacity woven polyester base treated with UV stabilizers, distinguished by its dimensional stability, abrasion resistance, and low moisture absorption. It is the workhorse grade for buyers who prioritize durability and cost efficiency over stretch or hand feel.
Sun Protective Apparel Fabric — A lightweight, breathable construction (typically 120–180 gsm) engineered for direct-to-skin wear, balancing UPF 50+ protection with high moisture vapor transmission and a soft hand. It is distinct in prioritizing comfort and wicking for shirts, hoodies, and activewear.
Outdoor UV Protection Fabric — A heavier coated grade (220–320 gsm) with reinforced tensile and tear strength plus elevated water column ratings, built for prolonged direct sun exposure. Its distinction is combined UV, water, and mechanical resistance for structural outdoor use.
Marine UV Resistant Fabric — A solution-dyed, salt- and mildew-resistant construction with the highest light fastness in the category (7–8) and water column up to 10,000 mmH2O. It is engineered for continuous marine exposure where UV, saltwater, and humidity act simultaneously.
UV Protection Stretch Fabric — An elastane-blended knit offering 4-way stretch (40–60% elongation) with retained UPF 50+ performance under tension, distinguished by its recovery properties and freedom of movement for fitted garments.
Swimwear Fabric — A chlorine- and saltwater-resistant nylon/elastane or polyester/elastane knit that maintains UV protection when wet, distinguished by fast drying, shape retention, and resistance to degradation from pool chemicals and repeated immersion.
Applications
- Outdoor and performance apparel: Sun-protective shirts, hoodies, arm sleeves, and hiking wear for markets with high UV exposure, where certified UPF 50+ documentation is required for retail claims.
- Swimwear and beachwear: Chlorine-resistant swimwear fabric maintaining UV protection when wet, used for competitive and leisure swimwear, rash guards, and board shorts.
- Marine and boating: Bimini tops, sail covers, boat canopies, and upholstery using solution-dyed marine grades that withstand continuous saltwater and sun exposure without fading.
- Outdoor structures and shade: Patio umbrellas, awnings, shade sails, gazebos, and tent panels using coated outdoor grades that combine UV blockage with water resistance.
- Sports and activewear: Compression garments, cycling wear, and running gear using stretch grades that retain UPF performance under repeated extension and recovery.
- Industrial and agricultural: Protective workwear, shade netting substrates, and equipment covers for workers and assets exposed to prolonged direct sunlight in hot climates.
Customization & Wholesale
Minimum order quantity starts at 500m per color per specification for standard in-stock constructions. Custom-developed fabrics requiring new yarn blends, coatings, or finishes carry an MOQ of 1,000–3,000m depending on complexity. Sample lengths of 3–5m are available for pre-production evaluation and lab testing.
Fabric widths are configurable at 44 inches (112cm), 58/60 inches (150cm), and up to 118 inches (300cm) for wide-width outdoor and marine grades. Custom widths are available subject to loom setup and minimum quantity confirmation.
Color customization covers standard stock shades, Pantone TCX/TPX matching, and solution-dyed development for maximum light fastness. Pantone matching typically requires a lab dip approval cycle, with an MOQ of 500–1,000m per custom color. Printing options include sublimation, digital, screen, and pigment printing for logos, patterns, and full-coverage designs, with print MOQs from 500m per design.
OEM and ODM services are available, including custom weight, hand feel, coating specification (PU, PA, or acrylic), functional finishes (water-repellent, antibacterial, moisture-wicking, anti-pilling), and private-label roll packaging with custom labels and care tags. Technical development support is provided for buyers specifying target UPF ratings, water column, or breathability values.
Standard lead time is 15–25 days for stock fabrics and 30–45 days for custom-developed orders after sample approval, subject to order volume and finishing requirements. Larger bulk orders exceeding 20,000m are scheduled by production slot with confirmed delivery timelines.
Export capabilities cover worldwide shipping under FOB, CIF, and EXW terms from major Chinese ports. Standard documentation includes commercial invoice, packing list, bill of lading, certificate of origin, and test reports (UPF, colorfastness, composition). Third-party testing through SGS, Intertek, or BV can be arranged on request. Certifications available include OEKO-TEX Standard 100, with REACH and other compliance documentation supported for regulated markets in the EU, North America, and Oceania. Standard packaging is roll form in waterproof plastic wrap, with cardboard tube cores, suitable for container and LCL consolidation.
