4-Way Stretch Fabric for Swimwear & Activewear

You've probably held a swim panel that snapped back crisp in one direction and went slack in the other. That's the gap between 2-way and 4-way stretch, and it decides how a garment fits after 50 wears.

This is our working reference for buyers sourcing 4-way stretch fabric for swimwear, leggings, cycling kit and compression wear. We build these fabrics at the mill in Keqiao, Shaoxing, so the numbers below come off our own spec sheets.

We recommend 4-way for anything worn tight against a moving body. For a relaxed cover-up or a lined skirt, 2-way is cheaper and enough.

The Fiber Mix We Run

Most of our 4-way stretch is 82% polyester / 18% elastane or a nylon-elastane variant. Recycled (RPET) versions run the same stretch band. Drop elastane below 15% and recovery sags by the second season — we've pulled those blends from our swim range for that reason.

• Polyester-elastane — chlorine tolerance, colour hold, lower cost. Our default for pool swimwear.
• Nylon-elastane — softer hand, higher UPF ceiling, pricier. Better for fashion swim and beachwear.
• RPET-elastane — GRS-traceable, same 4-way band, for brands with a recycled-content target.

Where Buyers Get It Wrong

Ordering on GSM alone. A 200 GSM fabric with 12% elastane and a 200 GSM fabric with 20% elastane feel like different materials on the body. Ask for elongation and recovery figures, not just weight — we send both on every swatch card.
